“Confidence is not good feeling, but recognition of the refuge–SunGuru Buddha”

禅宗二祖慧可拜师达摩时，长跪在达摩祖师寮房前的雪地上，希望灭自己烦恼心，求达摩祖师安心。你说慧可对达摩祖师有信心么？为什么达摩祖师说，除非天降红雪。因为对他信心资粮的否定，认为他还没有资格。这句话其实也是一种相应慧可的加持，看他能否舍弃自我知见。因为慧可的假我维度定义烦恼和菩提，而达摩祖师没有慧可分别境界定义的虚假圣心给他，而真正的圣心是承载一切烦恼无明的中道智慧。其实并不是要求慧可证到圣心，而是舍弃自己假我视角求法，舍弃凡夫心，方能取佛心。也叫空杯学佛。慧可借达摩祖师法语因缘，砍去自己左臂，超人的毅力和求法信念引领他超越凡夫心，鲜血染红了白雪。达摩祖师走出寮房，问他：你要灭烦恼心？在哪里，拿来我看看。慧可哑口无言，没有任何假我思维再做凡圣定义。达摩祖师看信心资粮具足，加持他说：我把心给你安上了。这才是信心的概念。信心不是你自己的好感，而是对依止上师和师父的维度和轨道的认可，乃至于舍弃假我心的认可。所以你还敢随便说有信心么？你了解规则和轨道么？即便全盘接受，能经受考验么？虽然也把斗志看做为一定程度的信心，但主要是圣人的规则的认可，即：常随佛学，依教奉行。也叫：听上师话。

When the Second Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, Huike, went to bow and become a disciple under Bodhidharma, he knelt for a long time in the snow before Bodhidharma’s hut, hoping to extinguish his own heart of troubles, and requested Bodhidharma to give him peace of heart. Do you think Huike had confidence in Bodhidharma? Then why did Bodhidharma say, “Unless red snow falls from the sky”? Because he denied the sufficiency of his confidence provisions, believing him unworthy. This statement itself was also a kind of empowerment that resonated with Huike, to see whether he could abandon his own self-perception. Because Huike’s false self dimension defined both troubles and enlightenment, yet Bodhidharma dont have the false sacred heart that Huike defined through his own discriminatory realms to give him, and the true holy heart is the Middle Way wisdom that bears all troubles and ignorance. It was not that Bodhidharma required Huike to realize the holy heart, but to abandon his false-self perspective in seeking the Dharma, to let go of the ordinary person’s heart — only then can one take the Buddha’s heart. This is also called “learning Buddhism with an empty cup.” Huike, inspired by Bodhidharma’s teachings, amputated his own left arm. His superhuman perseverance and unwavering confidence in the Dharma led him to transcend the ordinary heart, his blood staining the snow red. Bodhidharma walked out of his hut and asked him: “You wish to extinguish the heart of troubles? Where is it? Bring it here, let me see.” Huike was speechless, no false-self thought remained to make distinctions between ordinary and holy. Bodhidharma saw that the provisions of Confidence were sufficient, and empowered him, saying: “I have placed your heart at peace.” This is the true meaning of Confidence. Confidence is not your personal good feeling, but recognition of the dimension and path of your refuge — your Guru and master — even to the point of abandoning the false-self heart in that recognition. So, do you still dare to casually say you have Confidence? Do you understand the rules and the path? Even if you accept all of it, can you withstand the test? Though determination may also be regarded as a certain degree of Confidence, the main essence is recognition of the rules of the sages — that is: always follow the Buddha’s learning, and practice according to the teachings. This is also called: listening to the teacher’s words.
